As we began the process of creating Arise Single Moms twenty-two years ago, it involved many facets—from completing tons of paperwork, to forming a board of directors, to hours of prayer. As I prayed about this endeavor, God called me to a forty-day fast. Some of you may not be familiar with fasting, but it’s a way to intently focus, draw closer to God, be more in tune to hear from him, and petition fervently for him to move in a circumstance.
During those forty days, God guided me to Isaiah 62:6-7: “I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he established Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.” I heard a whisper through my soul, “That is who you are now. That is what you need to be for Arise. I am calling you to be a watchman on the wall for the ministry. It will be cumbersome. There will be little sleep and many tasks.”
I began my research into all things pertaining to watchmen. I learned they were protectors, prayer warriors, and sentinels. They warned of impending danger, kept an eye out for fires, and assisted with public safety. Their primary duty was to warn of impending danger.
Watchman refers to three different types of people. The first positioned themselves atop the city walls to stand guard, scouring the landscape looking for messengers or enemies. God revealed that I was to be the watchman, keeping vigil until Arise was built. He designated my role as overseer and protector.
Secondly, God assigned individuals with the task of keeping the watch of prayer. God’s intention was that Jerusalem exhibit his character and love for the world. The watchmen should pray ceaselessly for that end. My desire revolves around the concerted effort of seeking God’s will and committing to follow his plan.
The third type of watchman involved being wakeful or watchful to combat evil or be on the alert for any marauders or those lurking to destroy. It required them to be alert, lean forward, and peer into the distance. They were constantly looking, seeking, watching.
Momma, that is who you are for your family. You are the watchman on the wall scouring the landscape looking for any signs of danger. You are the protector and the prayer warrior. You are the last line of defense.
I took my assignment very seriously and have for all these years. I encourage you to embrace your role as the watchman who keeps a vigil over your children. It’s an important job.
