Plugging In

While traveling, I stopped at everyone’s beloved travel store where even if you’re not hungry you can stock up on snacks such as corndogs, hot tamales, slushes, and cotton candy. Traipsing back to my car with an armload of carbs, I witnessed a vehicle come screaming into the lot and pull up to the electric vehicle station. She quickly hooked up her car and turned to head into the building. As she walked by me, she smiled, and commented, “Almost didn’t make it. Waited too long to plug into the power.”

A light (no pun intended) went off in my head. How often do we wait too long to plug into God’s power? How many times do we skip connecting to the real power source and instead keep running on our own power until our tank is empty? I’m the number-one guilty party in that oftentimes I let other things creep in and blot out all time spent with God. My busyness and tasks take precedence. But that’s when I need to connect the most.

We plug into the Source through:

  • Engaging in prayer
  • Reading His word
  • Sitting in quiet times of solitude

Wouldn’t it be helpful if we each had power bars on our foreheads similar to our smart devices? Then you could see the red light flashing, warning that your tank is running low and you need to recharge.

This analogy reminded me of a time I worked on a home project using my cordless screw driver to assemble a desk and hutch. Sure, it worked well in the beginning, but it slowly drained of juice and couldn’t finish the task. But the minute I plugged it into the charger, it whirred like a whirling dervish.

If we move full force into our days on our own power, eventually we will slow and stop being effective. Our tasks will seem insurmountable, our days too short, and our skill level lacking. However, when we’re connected to the Source, we can surge forward like the Energizer Bunny®.

Don’t be stranded along life’s highway; plug into the Source!
